Hello and Welcome SE Ohio woodland owners!

Posted on February 6, 2012

I’m excited about the upcoming growing season in the hills of SE Ohio. It’s been a long and wet winter, and according to Buckeye Chuck we are predicted to have an early spring.

The main reason that I’m launching this blog is to help to connect with woodland owners in Appalachian Ohio.   I’ve been working with Ohio State University Extension for 11 years now, and I’ve decide it’s time to focus more of my time and energy in SE Ohio where nearly 2/3rds of Ohio’s woodland resources are located.

I’m pleased to share that we (numerous partners with and interest in Ohio’s woods and woodland owners) are in the process of developing a series of educational opportunities for you at the Vinton Furnace State Experimental Forest near McArthur.    This series is being designed for you the woodland owner

The initial program “A Day in the Woods” will take place on Saturday, April 14.  This program will feature displays from numerous partnering agencies and organizations who serve woodland owners like you.  There will be a brief presentation on the history of the Vinton Furnace and the newly designated Vinton Furnace State Experimental Forest.  We plan to have wagon tours of the woodland owner demonstration area, research activities at the forest including prescribed fire, and the iron furnace and Belgium Coke ovens (see image above)  that are located on the property.

We’ll keep you posted as plans develop!  DKA
